You can’t stop being afraid by pretending everything that scares you isn’t there. ~Michael Marshall

One of the best things about having your own business is it forces you to be aware of your now.

Though some might be painfully locked in the past and others hold themselves hostage to a future that hasn’t even happened yet, successful business owners constantly and critically examine the present moment.

That alone is the place from which effective business and life decisions are made. The actions we can take to build a successful business and life happen only in the now.

Such an examination requires standing in your own shoes. Look to your own experience rather than copying someone else’s. Instead, bravely ask: “What is happening right here, right now?” Don’t push away from it; don’t deny what is. Face it honestly. Openly. Without flinching.

I understand our natural instinct is to move away from what’s not comfortable, to try to get somewhere better, to follow dreams and passions wherever they may lead. The problem is the first step in your success journey is not a forward step but rather a backward one.

Certainly, forward steps are more familiar. Who doesn’t know what it feels like to seek, to strive, to constantly be on a search or personal quest? But that is not always the most productive use of time and energy. What if instead you simply turned around and looked directly at the place where you are standing?

That is the secret to letting go of otherwise endless struggling. The keys to success are how well you are navigating the present and adapting to the future. You must arm yourself with a mindset that can flourish for the long run. One that maximizes working potential.

When you try so hard to make success happen, obsessed with moving ahead, always chasing whatever it is you think you want or don’t have, it will continue to elude you. However, if you take that backward step, you just might see it has been with you all along.

INSIDER TIP:     To experience success tomorrow, you must first recognize the success you already are today.

More next time. Until then, remember to LOVE YOUR WORK, whatever it may be.
