Businesses are born of doing, not thinking.

When we come up with a new business idea, one of the more enjoyable aspects of bringing it to life is figuring out how we want to express our vision.

Except when we have no idea of what form it should take, where we see ourselves going with it, and how best to go about making that happen. Then we experience excruciating pain. Followed by paralysis that quickly has us doing absolutely nothing to move the idea forward.

It may feel safe — all this thinking, re-thinking, and thinking some more. But it’s an illusion.

All that non-doing? It’s an expression of fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of looking stupid. Fear of choosing the wrong thing to focus on. Fear of doing the right thing then failing at it. Or worse [for some of us], fear of doing the right thing and succeeding at it beyond all our imaginings.

Lives and businesses are moving faster and reaching farther than ever. They’re also getting more complicated and are becoming increasingly difficult to manage. When we’re working online, it feels like the whole world is watching. Which makes it so much harder to handle should any of our fears be realized.

Sometimes we respond to this fear by overdoing our websites, creating a lot of video noise and visual distraction, and pummelling social media relentlessly with our insecurities and confused marketing messages. We can overwhelm ourselves with busy work that doesn’t lead to sales and drive ourselves to exhaustion in the process of chasing one shiny object after another. Perhaps we leave a trail of discarded relationships; sometimes we realize we’ve haven’t made or maintained a single relationship along the way.

Technology may have made our lives more full, but at the same time we’ve become uncomfortably so. Which is why I’ve decided to find a simpler way. Simplicity equals sanity.

It takes longer to reduce things to their essence and get to the core. All things worthwhile take time.

Perfection is overrated. Best to try something, and make changes along the way. Perfection is not the goal. Excellence will be tolerated.

Sanity, on the other hand… now there’s something worth risking failure for!

More next time. Until then, remember to LOVE YOUR WORK, whatever it may be.
