Let go of established norms to see things in a different way.

Open Culture published an article titled The Psychology of Messiness & Creativity: Research Shows How a Messy Desk & Creative Work Go Hand in Hand that I thought our SMARTSTARTERs would find interesting.

So many buy into the notion “clean” and “uncluttered” are the ideal to be achieved at any cost that they are spending all their time and energy running after perfection (as defined by others) at the expense of getting their work out there for sale. Whether it be unproductively chasing inbox zero, maintaining a pristine desk and workspace, or endlessly tinkering with product design instead of launching, the end result is the same. They are not making any money!

Tragic, isn’t it?

Creativity does not require someone elses’s idea of perfect conditions to make itself known. In fact, research shows otherwise, as the article attests.

No time to read the entire piece? Then just watch the accompanying video. In 2 minutes 43 seconds, you’ll feel better about yourself and your working/living conditions already if you’re a master of disorganization.

More next time. Until then, remember to LOVE YOUR WORK, whatever it may be.
